We are often asked about the right pronunciation of the article ‘The’. Is it a matter of personal choice or are there rules to be followed ? This small guide aims at clearing such doubts

The two different pronunciations

There are two different pronunciations of the article 'The'

A)    Thah/ Duh
B)    Thee /Dee

 



Rule 1 : Follow your tongue / Vowels and consonants

 

Remember- ‘It’s a rule if it’s easy for your tongue’. Before we look at the rule, take a moment to say the following phrases

Thee unusual Thah unusual

You would have realized that it was easier to say 'Thee unusual' compared to 'Thah unusual'. To see why it is so, let's look at the sound following 'The'

By now you would have realized that it’s naturally easy to say “thee” before vowels and “thah” before consonants.  This indeed is the first rule


“Pronounce it as thee if the following sound is a vowel, else pronounce it as thuh”.



Rule 2 : Superlative and Emphasis

According to first rule it should be ‘Thuh best’, but still most of the time we say and get to hear ‘Thee best’. So what’s happening here ?


When we wish to emphasize on something, we use Thee instead of thah irrespective of the following sound.

He is thee best student we have.
He is thee businessman.
It's only for thee members.
