In this era of globalization, the difference between the American and British English doesn’t hold much practical importance. In fact the distinction between the two is slowly shrinking as the influence of American English is increasingly growing on British English. There are 2 Major Areas where you find British English Different than American English. 1. Spelling Difference between British and American EnglishTry typing Color and Colour in your Microsoft word document. Depending upon the settings of the spell check, it’s bound to tell you that one of the spellings is wrong. You can categorize the difference between the spellings . Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and there may be several other spellings which differ in American and British English. Category A: Color Vs Colour ( O or OU)
Category B: Organise Vs Organize ( S or Z)
Category C: Single Alphabet Vs Double Alphabet
Category D: Meter Vs Metre ( Placement of E)

2. Use of Tenses and terms in American and British English
A) Use of Shall in British English. In American English Shall almost doesn’t exist.
B) Past Perfect and Simple Past In American English, Past perfect and Simple Past is sometimes used interchangeably. In British English however, the appropriate tense is used.
C) Companies are represented as Plurals in British English In British English, generally large corporations are represented as a plural entity.
3. Is it correct to use British and American at the same timeIt's difficult to say whether it's correct or not. But for sure you can't mix American and British Pronunciations for a word. I have noticed many people in India pronounce Schedule as "Skedule ", which is wrong. Schedule in American English is pronounced as "Skejule". In British it's "Schedule". You can use either of these , but not "Skedule" |
